The Baker-Polito Administration declared Thursday, September 19, 2019 as Massachusetts Day at the BIG E, as officials from the Mass Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR), Mass Department of Conservation & Recreation (MDCR) Mass Office of Travel & Tourism (MOTT) and the Eastern States Exhibition (ESB) gathered to celebrate.

MOTT Executive Director Keiko Matsudo Orrall read the Proclamation to the assembled audience and presented it to Donna Woolam of ESB.

The proclamation reads in part:

Whereas as part of the 17-Day Annual Fall Celebration of THE BIG E, also known as The Eastern States Exposition, billed as New England’s Great State Fair, our travel and hospitality leaders are celebrating Massachusetts Day at THE BIG E and the 100th Anniversary of the Massachusetts Building to demonstrate the value of tourism to the state’s economy and to accentuate the uniqueness of each of the state’s tourism regions,

Now, therefore, I, Charles D. Baker, Governor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts do hereby proclaim Thursday, September 19th, 2019, to be, MASSACHUSETTS DAY AT THE BIG E

MOTT Executive Keiko Matsudo Orrall said in her remarks, “About 40% of attendees travel more than 50 miles to attend the Big E, and by definition, that makes them tourists. So that translates to 600,000+ tourists visiting the Big E from the New England and Mid-Atlantic states, and from as far away as Alaska. Bottom line, tourists are good for our economy.”

In addition, Commissioner John Lebeaux presented the annual Mass Building Hall of Fame Award, and recognized the winners of the Mass Ag in the Classroom contest.

Finally, the officials added items to the 100th anniversary time capsule that celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Massachusetts State Building along the Avenue of the States.
