The Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation (MassDCR) teams up with local parks advocates each January 1 to participate in First Day Hikes, a national initiative that encourages everyone to celebrate the American outdoors with a guided tour.

The first day hike tradition actually started at the Blue Hills Reservation in Milton back in 1992, and has since become a national pastime, with all 50 states participating, according to America’s State Parks.
